The public MOT history checker
This page is for anyone, signed in or not, who wants to check a vehicle's MOT history on the MOTLogs website without an account.
Where is the public checker?
Go to /mot-history on the MOTLogs website. It is headed "Check any vehicle's MOT history" and needs no sign-in. It is free.
How do I check a vehicle?
- Type the registration into the Registration box, for example
AB12 CDE. It accepts up to 12 characters; spaces and lower case are ignored. - Click Look up.
The address changes to include ?reg= and your registration, so you can bookmark or share a result.
What does the result show?
- The plate and the make and model as a heading, followed by facts that the DVSA supplies:
Fuel,Colour,First usedandEngine size. Missing facts are left out. - Three tiles: MOT due (the expiry date of the most recent passed test, or "Not recorded"), Last recorded mileage (or "Not recorded") and Tests on record.
- Mileage at each test, a line chart shown when at least two tests have a mileage. Kilometre readings are converted to miles, and tests with no odometer are skipped. Hover over a dot for the date and mileage.
- Test history, newest first. Each test shows its date, a
PASSorFAILlabel, the mileage ("Mileage not recorded" if none) and "No defects", "1 item" or "n items". Click a test to expand its defects and advisories, each labelled Dangerous, Major, Minor, Advisory, Repaired or Note, plus "Certificate expiry" if there is one.
What errors can I get?
- "Enter a UK registration of 2 to 8 letters and numbers, for example AB12 CDE." The registration is too short or long after removing spaces and symbols.
- "We could not find a vehicle with that registration in the DVSA MOT history. Check it and try again. Vehicles under three years old have no MOT history yet."
- "The DVSA MOT history service did not respond. Please try again in a few minutes."
- "You have made a lot of lookups in a short time. Please wait a few minutes and try again." See the limits below.
Are there limits on lookups?
Yes. Each internet address can make 10 lookups in 10 minutes and 100 in a day. Over the limit, the page still loads but shows the message above. Wait about ten minutes. Found vehicles are cached for an hour and not-found results for ten minutes, so repeating a lookup within that time does not count against the DVSA but does use one of your lookups.
