TQI measures explained
This page is for testers, quality control managers and Authorised Examiners who want to know what each row in the TQI table measures.
What are the main TQI measures?
The first rows of the table summarise a tester's work for the month and vehicle group. These names come from the DVSA file.
| Row | What it tells you |
|---|---|
Tests done |
How many tests the tester or site did. Used to show the test count under each column and to flag small samples. |
Average vehicle age |
The average age, in years, of the vehicles tested. Older vehicles tend to fail more. |
Average test time |
The average length of a test in minutes. A very short average on a high volume deserves a look at individual test times in the test log. |
Tests failed |
The share of tests that failed (the fail rate). |
What are the failure by category rows?
Below those rows, each row is the share of tests that failed in one inspection area. They let you see whether a high overall fail rate comes from one area. For Group B (classes 3, 4, 5 and 7) the rows are:
- Body, chassis, structure
- Brakes
- Buses and coaches supplementary tests
- Identification of the vehicle
- Lamps, reflectors and electrical equipment
- Noise, emissions and leaks
- Road Wheels
- Seat belt installation check
- Seat belts and supplementary restraint systems
- Speedometer and speed limiter
- Steering
- Suspension
- Tyres
- Visibility
For Group A (classes 1 and 2) the page shows the motorcycle measures: Tests done, Average vehicle age, Average test time, Tests failed, Identification of the vehicle, Audible warning (Horn), Brakes, Lamps and reflectors and Steering. MOTLogs shows whichever rows DVSA included in your file.
Why is a fail rate high or low?
A fail rate above or below national does not on its own mean something is wrong. DVSA's own examples are that a station in a rural area may see more suspension failures, and a tester who tests older vehicles may fail more. Check the vehicle mix, check the volume, then look at the individual tests in the test log. See National comparison and outliers.
Can I see the same measures for several months?
The TQI log page shows one month at a time. To compare months, change the month in the top bar, or use the Performance page, which shows 13 months of fail rate and test time per tester. See Performance trend over 13 months.
